Someone mentioned clonidine, that's a good choice. Sympathetic (adrenergic) activity will be indirectly increased through preventing Parasympathetic activity. This will reduce 'relaxation/calming' properties of the PNS and therefore produce the opposite effect - higher heart rate, etc. They decrease arousal and lead to drowsiness - right - but they inhibit cholinergic action in the peripheral nervous system. They have anti-histamine/anti-cholinergic effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems (PNS). I wouldn't advise using antihistamines as an anxiolytic, i.e., diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine and here is why. So do any of you know any medications that work right away for general anxiety disorder and panic disorder, that can be taken only as needed and work right away without having to take it for weeks? I have looked into gabapentin but that seems to need to be in your system for awhile to work to? Any other suggestions? I dont feel physically or mentally addicted to the benzos and dont wish to stop but feel like one day she will discontinue my prescriptions and i want something i can try as an alternative. I also dont like the fact that i have to take the medication daily and if i miss doses i can get bad side effects and it takes several weeks for these medications to work whitch i really dont like. The reason i am against this is because both of my parents have tried lots of these different types of medications and my dad went suicidal and my mom ended up in the psychward, she lost her mind! She has offered anti depressants and blood pressure type medicines. Then i am prescribed 0.5 mg lorazepam for panic attacks in particular whitch i get on average between 1-5 times a week, mostly at work or waking up from nightmares.Īnyways my psychiatrist has been wanting to take me off of my lovely benzos and switch me to a different non addicting anti anxiety medication. I am currently prescribed 50 mg vyvanse daily for ADD, 0.5 mg clonazepam "as needed", i use this on days i know im going to have anxiety about 2-3 times a week.
